Last week on my morning walk, I came across a sign – “No Stopping in Tunnel” – and I stopped and laughed. This sign sums it up. When we are faced with a decision, a fork in the road, it can be tempting to get stuck in a tunnel. Instead of looking at all the exciting options, we can only see a foot or two in any direction, and we miss so much. Endless possibilities are out there, but we refuse to get out of our own tunnel.
I remember when I was first considering leaving the practice of law, and I thought about what else I could do. The options I identified were to teach law, become a mediator, or even give stress reduction classes to lawyers. When I listed theses options to a friend, she asked me if I had considered anything outside of law. I had not – even though there were plenty of options to explore, I put myself in the law box. Shortly after that conversation, I discovered the profession of life coaching and was willing to look at this non-law option.
So, the next time you feel like you are stuck in life and don’t have any way out, think about this sign. Tell yourself you will not stop in the tunnel. You may briefly pass through the tunnel and feel afraid or limited, but you will keep moving out into the light. Affirm that you are open to all options and ready to be surprised and delighted. Be willing to follow-up on the doors that open and lead to new options.
Let me know how you get through the tunnels in your life. .
